The chase for the 2018 Black College National Championship heats up as another exciting week of Black College Football has concluded, one which featured several top 10 match-ups and a few upsets!
In the SWAC, Alcorn State’s defeat of Grambling State, 33 – 26, solidified the Braves as the top team in the SWAC East division and puts severe doubt on whether Grambling will be able to recover enough to win the SWAC West.
North Carolina A&T left zero doubt as to who is the better team by beating Bethune Cookman, 35 – 10, in a match-up of MEAC heavyweights. The Aggies still have hope of winning the MEAC championship & earning a berth in this year’s Celebration Bowl.
Southern scored a needed victory over Texas Southern University, 21 – 7, at the State Fair Showdown in Dallas, especially in the wake of Grambling’s loss at Alcorn, in order to keep their SWAC Championship hopes alive.
Tennessee State earned themselves an impressive Homecoming victory, 41 – 7, over Tennessee Tech to remain in the chase while Prairie View had an off week! The Howard Bison held off Morgan State, 35 – 26, to remain in the picture for the MEAC Championship. Norfolk State was handily defeated by the surging North Carolina Central Eagles 36 – 6!

Bowie State earned a huge divisional victory over the Virginia Union Panthers, 27-13. With the win, the Bulldogs take over first place in the CIAA North, improving to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference play. The Panthers fall to 5-2 overall and are also 3-1 in conference play withe the Bulldogs possessing the tie breaker. The Fayetteville State Broncos are in firm control of the CIAA South!
After defeating Morehouse last week, Albany State takes control of the SIAC East division after defeating CAU, 36-6, for Homecoming. The Golden Rams still sit at the top of the SIAC East but have a huge match-up with another division heavyweight, the Benedict Tigers, in their next game. Speaking of Benedict, the Tigers fall to division rival Morehouse, 14-10, this past weekend and will need to rebound with a win against Albany State to remain in conversations regarding the SIAC East and the SIAC Conference Championship!
Tuskegee still sits at the top of the SIAC West division with a 3-1 conference and a 5-3 overall record. The closest team to the Golden Tigers in their division is Miles College with a 2-2 conference & 2-6 overall record.
Don’t sleep on the Langston! The Lions are 6-1, with their only loss on the season coming at the hands of SWAC powerhouse Southern Jaguars!
