SWAC moves 2018 Football Championship Game to Birmingham

In partnership with the city of Birmingham, the SWAC has decided to bring its two most high profile championship events back to the Magic City! With the agreement, the 2018 Toyota SWAC Championship Game returns to Legion Field and the Bill Harris Arena will host the 2019 SWAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Legion Field served the initial site of the SWAC Football Championship game from 1999 until 2012 before moving to NRG Stadium in Houston. Birmingham also served as the home of the SWAC Basketball Tournament during the mid-2000s, with Bill Harris Arena hosting the event as recently as 2009. The basketball tournaments also moved to Houston eventually.

The SWAC had announced last year that it would end the championship game for football after the 2017 game after 18 years but officials decided to keep playing it because of renewed support from member schools.

The SWAC Football Championship Game will be held on Dec. 1st.
